Our Process

    Discovery

    We engage in a complimentary consultation so we can gain a thorough understanding of your current business systems and process, and your area of need. One of our core values is to actively listen to clients needs, requirements, and concerns. If you currently use a FileMaker system, we do a system functionality analysis.

    We follow up with a project scope and cost estimate proposal and answer any questions you may have.

    Design

    The first step of our work for you is designing the foundation of the system and the proposed system functionality.  We may ask to watch you perform specific tasks on your system, or very specific details of your workflow and process.

    From our findings, we construct an Entity Relationship Diagram to define the foundation and floor plan of your database.

    An additional benefit you may find is that having an impartial 3rd party observe your business processes can give you unique insight and may offer streamlined alternative ways of working.

    Development

    We approach projects using a modified agile development methodology. This allows us to keep a tight rein on development tasks and stay on track toward meeting your requirements and goals. You will be given weekly project updates to monitor progress. Your feedback and input to these updates is critical to a successful project.

    Training

    After development is complete, we review everything with you and walk you through the operation of the system/tool to ensure that the functionality meets your expectations. As necessary, we create documentation to help you use the system efficiently, and spend the time with you to be sure you are familiar with all aspects of the systems functionality.

    Support

    After delivery of the system, we will not simply wish you luck and walk away. We check in on a regular basis to be sure that you fully understand how to use the system and are taking advantage of new efficiencies.

    If after you've had some experience with it, you decide changes, tweaks, or modifications are needed, we can make those changes and are here for you to support you all the way.

Our Tools of Choice

FileMaker Pro

FileMaker Pro is clearly our preferred tool of choice for a number of reasons.

  • It is a powerful relational database based rapid development software platform comprised of FileMaker Server, FileMaker Advanced, FileMaker Pro, and FileMaker Go (iOS), with versions of each which run on either OS X or Windows and FileMaker Cloud service available through AWS.
  • We can prototype quickly and get a functional model up and running fairly quickly. This helps us deliver quality solutions to our clients.
  • The same developed solution runs natively on OS X, iOS, or Windows.
  • Solutions comprise one or more files, each containing: database tables of records; layouts to display data; scripts to automate processes; value lists to display options; security system; custom functions — developer defined expressions; custom menus — developer added menus; themes that control appearance; third Party Plugins can be used to add features.

Airtable

If FileMaker is overkill for the project, then Airtable may be just the right fit. We use it for some of our own small personal projects.

  • Airtable starts with a familiar spreadsheet front end, but a database back end.
  • Powerful filtering, sorting, and grouping give the freedom to arrange work just the way you like. Choose the right views for your content, and save them for easy access any time.
